The scout hut where it all began.
1994 A short break
We were wondering what to do for a different type of holiday for Phab members
when someone said, "Can we go to London to see the Queen"? We thought, "Why
not?" So we decide on the places we would like to visit and set about
writing letters. Firstly, we booked our accomodation at Baden Powell House.
Next we wrote to Buckingham Palace to reserve a place on a tour inside.
The secretary was very helpful and even suggested where we could park our
mini-bus without having to feed parking meters and only about 100 yards from
the Palace. Next it was a letter to Downing Street, again the secretary was
magnificent and fixed it for us to take our bus into Downing street itself.
We felt very important as the gates were opened and the bus scanned for
unwelcome devices! We parked up and unloaded everyone and stayed about 2
hours whilst everybody had a good look round. The Policeman guarding the
door to Number 10 was really friendly and obliged by letting us try on his
helmet and be photographed at the door. Ollie pretended he was the next Prime
Minister and I think Mandy fancied her chances as Chancellor outside Number
11, she held up her briefcase, sorry, her lunch box, and we all laughed. We had
a lovely time but had to move on. We strolled around the Houses of
Parliament (outside as they were shut for the holidays), went into
Westminster Abbey, gazed at the Thames and had our picnic lunch. Another
pleasant place was Covent Garden, then several members went to Harrods and
rubbed shoulders with the mega rich. Some of us went to the Natural history
Museum and on our final day we went to Madame Tussauds followed by another
picnic in Regents Park. All in all we had a great time and were sorry to say
cheerio to Baden Powell House, a very good place to stay for disabled people,
with good food including packed lunches. I think we should go again soon!! Told by Ruby White.
