Outings
Our calendar doesn't really get into full swing until the middle of Spring, it just happens that way, but if
the rest of the members are like me then it's the warmer weather and lighter nights that get me out. We
have of course done things earlier on in the year, like tenpin bowling and pub meals to name just a couple.
With the opening of a multiplex cinema in Burton later in the year it will mean that we we be visiting the cinema
more often than we visit the one at Derby We will of cause be doing other things like going out for
meals, karaoke and quizzes on club nights and much more.
On the 15th of December 2000 most of us went to the NEC to a 60's concert in aid of the Banardo's charity, we went the
previous year also, most of the acts appearing were their on both ocassions, there was Mud, Hot Chocalate, Alvin
Stardust, Shawaddywaddy, Roy Wood, Suzie Quatro, and a couple more, being a Roy Wood fan, I was actually dissappointed
with his performance, but they did raise a lot of money.
On 3rd June 2001 the first party from our club went on a boat trip, we started from Wanlip, Syston we had
an enjoyable day the sun was shining. About 12 members went we all took a packed lunch and we stopped at the
Waterside Inn and we at the side of the river which was most pleasant. Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves, Tom
was helping open the locks with a little help from Margarets Grandson Jack.
On Thursday the 16th August 2001 we followed other members of
Burton Phab Club to our destination which
was the canalside at Wanlip in Leicestershire where a
narrowboat was waiting for us. It was fitted with an excellent lift so that those of us in wheelchairs boarded
without any problems and after settling down we started our steady cruise for about an hour, then we came to the
Waterside Inn where we stopped for lunch. We sat outside on benches enjoying many giggles and although it
only rained for a very short time we were glad of the parasols while waiting the 40 minutes or so for our meal.
After having plenty to eat we boarded and set off again but after half an hour we moored up while someone
took orders and fetched ice creams. Then we carried on cruising taking in the lovely scenery and enjoying the
company which made it a very nice experience and I for one was sorry when it ended. As guests of the Phab club Colin and
I were very grateful for being invited, and thank you all very much, Colin and Joan Forrest.
